Last week, I was delighted to get to participate in a really fun art class that was sponsored by a winery. I’m very much a beginner when it comes to painting, so I usually drink wine when practicing this art to help calm down my nerves. The good news was that during this evening last week, combining art and wine was virtually mandated. I’m excited to share my experience with you in this article.

The Art Class

My friend Sonya Paz is an amazing artist. She has been painting for most of her life and is known for her vivid, colorful images that, as Sonya says, “explode off the canvas.”

In the last 10 or so years, Sonya has started a business called VinoPaint where she leads wonderfully fun in-person and virtual art classes. I’ve taken six of her classes and can’t speak highly enough about them. Her ability to turn me into an “artist” is very impressive.

The Winery

Last week’s class featured one of my favorite paintings of Sonya’s, a wine bottle with two glasses and some beautiful grapes. Villa Del Monte sponsored the event. They are a wonderful Santa Cruz winery that partners with Sonya. In fact, one of their bottles features a gorgeous painting of hers. When we signed up for this class, we got our art supplies per normal, plus two bottles of Villa Del Monte’s wines! Woo hoo!

Art and Wine Combined

So, on the day of the class, I was eager to paint Sonya’s beautiful picture of a wine bottle and two wine glasses while sipping Villa Del Monte’s wine. YAY!

For me, the biggest treat was that the winery sent a Chardonnay. I’m not a big Chardonnay fan, because I don’t like the butter oak bombs that come out of Napa. I know a ton of people who love that style of wine. It’s just not my cup of tea or should I say glass of wine. Well, the big treat for me was that the winery does their Chardonnay in a European style where the wine has some acidity. I loved it. It was so much fun to try that wine followed by their red blend the next day. And guess what. I was so enamored by John and Paul, the owners of the winery, that I decided I needed to visit them over the next weekend. So I’m now the proud owner of six bottles of their wine.

The next time you’re thinking about combining art and wine, please consider doing it with VinoPaint and ideally with the VinoPaint class that is sponsored by Villa Del Monte.

Cheers!
