Wine Party Business Questions
Wine Party Business Questions

Having been a wine consultant for more than 10 years, I have had the privilege of speaking to hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have questions about this wonderfully fun wine party business. In this article, I will answer many of the questions I’ve received over the years. If you are thinking about becoming a wine consultant, I would love for you to read through this Q&A. If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Questions About Being a Wine Consultant

Question: What do I do as a wine consultant?
Answer: You lead fun, educational in-home wine tastings.

Question: How do I find my hosts for these wine tastings?
Answer: You start with a kick-off tasting (notice that I don’t say wine party, since that sounds too much like a party) where you invite friends and family. At your kick-off tasting, you invite your friends and family to sign up for their own tastings. Beyond your friends and family, you will do a lot of networking to meet interested hosts.

Question: How will I get trained?
Answer: The training is great. It’s a combination of on line, conference calls, one-on-one phone calls and Facebook groups where we share information and ask questions.

Question: Do I need to be licensed?
Answer: No. WineShop At Home is licensed to sell alcohol. As wine consultants, we facilitate transactions between our customers and WineShop At Home.

Questions About the Wine Party Piece of the Business

Question: How does a tasting work?
Answer: Your host pays a small fee for a tasting for up to 16 people. For that price, she or he gets a fun, educational, entertaining 1 ½ to 2 hour private tasting where you introduce the host and her or his friends to 6 wonderful wines, valued at more than $120, made by WineShop At Home. Our tastings are an incredibly fun try-before-you-buy experience.

Question: Do I need to keep inventory for these tastings?
Answer: No.

Questions about Compensation

Question: How do I make money?
Answer: You earn commission monthly on your sales and your team’s sales. The commission plan has three components:

  • Your base commission starts at 20% and goes up to 29% when you achieve the level of Team Leader. To earn the Team Leader title, you and three personally sponsored people together sell $3,500 two months in a row.
  • You get volume bonuses of 5%, 10% and 15% respectively are given for monthly sales of $1,500, $2,500 and $3,500.
  • On team sales, you make between 3% and 8%.

Questions about the Company

Question: Who is WineShop At Home?
Answer: WineShop At Home is a Napa winery that takes its wines directly to consumers so they can “try before they buy” without having to leave their homes. WineShop At Home does not sell its wines retail or wholesale. The company only sells its wines through its team of wine consultants.
