The Latest Healthy Wine News

I always get happy when I read stories about wine’s health benefits. Two recent articles inspired me to look for more healthy wine news. I hope you enjoy what I found.

Red Wine Is One Actor’s Secret

According to abcnews.go.com, Actor Frank Grillo says his secret to staying fit is “A glass of red wine a day and lots of olive oil.” He explains that this combination is due to his being Italian.

Red Wine Is Good for Preventing Summer Colds

Vinepair.com explains that “Green tea, produce, and red wine all have the same cold-defeating flavonoids… Flavonoids… have antioxidant properties. In other words, they help prevent your body from succumbing to illnesses like a nasty summer cold. According to a study from the University of Auckland, drinking red wine can ‘significantly reduce the risk of catching colds and coughs.'”

Red Wine Is Good for the Gut

USNews.com says that wine increases the diversity of microbial species in the gut, which “seems to bode well for digestive health.”

Healthy Wine News Is Limitless

MedicalNewsToday.com’s article entitled “Wine: Health Benefits and Health Risks” is so glowingly positive that you almost don’t notice the negatives, some of which are the opposites of the positive. For example, they talk about the right amount of wine helping with depression, and the wrong amount contributing to depression.
They spend a lot of time talking about the definition of moderate wine consumption and the importance of understanding this term.
For people who love to read about the health benefits of wine, this is a really fun article.

Wine Consumption May Help with Azheimers and Diabetes

Winespectator.com had two fun articles. One highlighted how moderate wine consumption can reduce the risks of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The other talked about how it can help with diabetes.

107-year-old Man Loved His Wine!
107-year-old Man Loved His Wine!

The Huffington Post had a great article about Antonio Docampo García, who passed away recently at the age of 107. “His family said he enjoyed such a long life thanks to his love of wine.”

The Big Question: Can Healthy Wine News Be Trusted?

Not to rain too heavily on this fantastic parade, but not all research is good research.
In March 2016, Angus Chen wrote an interesting article for NPR that put down a lot of the wine health research that we know and love.
In May 2016, John Oliver of Last Week Tonight did a brilliant piece on “why media outlets so often report untrue or incomplete information as science.”
So the long and short of it is we should enjoy wine for wine’s sake. If there are a few health benefits that go along for the ride, that makes it all the better.
