Betty's Wine Musings

I’m a big red wine drinker, but summer calls for whites. So today, I would like to introduce you to two new summer whites from WineShop At Home that are at the top of my list. I encourage you to try them and enjoy them throughout the summer.

McKenna 2019 Lodi Sauvignon Blanc

Our McKenna Sauvignon Blanc was our first wine released for the 2019 vintage. So, you can expect a young, powerful, flavorful wine, something I happily look for in a Sauvignon Blanc.

The nose starts with some floral notes, like honeysuckle and orange blossom. Then, some aromas of apricot, quince, grapefruit and pear take over in the attack. This Sauvignon Blanc is very dry and did not receive any oak treatment. There is a striking minerality that dominates the mouthfeel, along with some fruity flavors of mandarin and orange. The structure has medium-intensity and length. There is some acidity which provides balance, but it is not the main characteristic.

This varietal is known for pairing well with a wide range of dishes, like Asian-style salads, scallops, steamed mussels or chicken alfredo. For summer wines, Sauvignon Blanc has been my go-to wine for a long time. I like to think of it as an alcoholic lemonade. Incredibly refreshing and incredibly yummy.

Dusk Firefly

Our Dusk Firefly is a dry white California wine that is a blend of 45% Malvasia, 25% Chenin Blanc, 25% French Colombard and 5% Chardonnay, mainly from the 2018 and 2019 vintages. Behind its pale-yellow color, the wine displays a rich citrus nose with notes of orange, mandarin, lychee and guava. The attack is crisp yet smooth with more citrus characters coming forward. Firefly has medium intensity in the mid-palate and a very juicy finish.

This straightforward wine has clean, dry lines that can be enjoyed on the porch all summer long with a grilled cheese, steamed clams, grilled striped bass, chicken wings, roast turkey or crab cakes.

Comparing the Two Summer Whites

Both summer whites are very refreshing. For me, the Dusk Firefly has more lime notes, while the Sauvignon Blanc has more lemon and grapefruit notes. I’d love to compare my experience with yours. If you’d like to try these wines in a virtual tasting, or perhaps a real tasting, if that is ever allowed, I would love to schedule a tasting with you Please reach out to me via email or by calling me at 650-714-7009.

Cheers!
