I just came back from Austin, TX. So I read up on Austin, TX wine.
Looking for Austin, TX wine
Googling Austin, TX Wine
I started my search by googling Austin, TX wine. I came across a bunch of wine tours and a bunch of wineries. It says there are more than 60 wineries in the Texas Hill Country, plus a bunch of wine bars.
Fredericksburg, which is about 80 miles from Austin, appears to be the most important wine region of the Texas Hill Country, which consists of the following counties: Bandera, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Comal, Coryell, Crockett, Edwards, Gillespie (where Fredericksburg is), Hays, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Lampasas, Llano, Mason, McCullouch, Menard, Real, San Saba, Schleicher, Sutton, Travis (where Austin is), Val Verde and Williamson.
The area has a nonprofit organization started in 1999 by eight visionary wineries. Their site has all kinds of good information.
Austin, TX Wineries
In my quick search, I found just two wineries in Austin:
- The Austin Winery “is the only full production winery in the city – specializing in natural wine from 100% Texas grown vineyards. This open concept urban winery is a wine bar & venue, surrounded by the tanks, barrels and amphorae actively used in their winemaking.” Their “defining wine”is called Violet Crown, and it is made up of 67% Tempranillo, 22% Cabernet and 11% Alicante Bouschet.
- Cape Bottle Room “decided to start Cape Bottle Room when we realized that there is a serious lack of South African wine options in the United States.” They of course have Pinotage on their menu, which is a red wine grape that Is South Africa’s signature variety.
There were a bunch of wineries in Carson City, Driftwood and of course Fredericksburg, TX.
Plus, a bunch of great-looking wine bars in Austin and near Austin. I hope I will get to visit one of them.
